History
The city of Maricopa is the largest city in Pinal County with more than 45,000 residents. At one time known as the “Oasis in the Desert,” Maricopa was founded around a series of eight watering holes known as Maricopa Wells. Located about eight miles north of the present day city, Maricopa Wells is still served by several of Arizona’s rivers including the Gila, Vekol, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. These resources made Maricopa a critical trading town for travelers going from East to West and slowly but surely built the developments which comprise the city today.
