It would be difficult to reside in Arizona if it weren’t for Phoenix cooling systems. Air conditioning units keep homes cool even when it is 110 degrees outside. Over the years air conditioning units and cooling technologies have evolved and brought greater efficiency to homeowners. Below are a few of the recent transitions for Phoenix air conditioning and how the technology updates are continuing to benefit Arizona homeowners.

Recent Phoenix Cooling Updates

The first modern electrical air conditioning unit was invented in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier. The design controlled not only the temperature but also the humidity in a room. By using cold water, the Carrier units were able to produce cool air throughout a room.

In 1928 Freon came into use in cooling units. The chemical is nonflammable and was used in new equipment until recently. Engineers found that the use of Freon was more efficient in regulating the temperature and energy usage in air conditioning units. In 2010, the federal government banned its use due to concerns about depletion of the ozone layer. Since then, a different refrigerant is used called R-410A.

Newest on the market include impressive air filtration units and have the capability to lessen the effects of asthma and allergies. Currently, this process can happen using a UV light treatment or a mechanical air filter. Each of these Phoenix air conditioning filters is able to reduce the smells and byproducts of cigarette smoke and mold.

Benefits of Updating Your Phoenix Air Conditioning Unit

Over the years engineers have been able to construct air conditioning units to better regulate the humidity and temperature of rooms and homes. By inventing new ways to stretch the reach of the cool air, each generation of Phoenix cooling units is more reliable and efficient than the last.

As technology continues to advance, Arizona home owners continue to reap the benefits. Consistently, units are becoming more energy efficient, using less power to create more cold air. This lowers home energy bills, especially during the hot summer months. Also, because the Phoenix air conditioning units are using less energy they condense the carbon footprint of a family and help individuals to become greener.

Chas Roberts has been serving Arizonans for 70 years and is your source for more information on Phoenix air conditioning. Schedule an appointment online or call (602) 328-5066 in the Phoenix area or (520) 618-1884 in Tucson to learn more about why you should choose Chas.

Phoenix, Arizona (April 24, 2012) – The 42nd annual Earth Day is just around the corner – April 22, 2012. To mark this important day, the Earth Day Network is asking everyone to do something positive for the environment as part of their A Billion Acts of Green® campaign.

There are many simple ways to be “green” at home, starting with your air conditioning system. According to energystar.gov, as much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Here are some tips to save energy and perform your act of green:

Change your air filter regularly: It’s recommended that most disposable filters should be changed monthly. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you cool, thereby wasting energy.

Install a Programmable Thermostat: A programmable thermostat automatically reduces heating and cooling in your home when you don’t need as much, thereby saving energy and money. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, homeowners can save about $180 a year in energy costs by installing a programmable thermostat and properly setting and maintaining the settings.

Regular Air Conditioning Maintenance: Regular maintenance of your cooling system can improve efficiency and comfort. Maintaining your equipment can prevent future problems and unwanted costs, according to the Energy Star website.

Replace Your Old Air Conditioner: The typical life span of an air conditioning unit is 6-10 years. If your unit is this age or older, it might be time to consider a replacement. Depending on where you live, replacing your old cooling equipment with a more energy-efficient system can cut your annual energy bill by nearly $200, according to energystar.gov. Check with your local power company because many offer rebates to homeowners who install a more energy-efficient system.

Chas Roberts has been helping Arizona homeowners save energy and money for 70 years. For more information on how you can “green” your home air conditioning system, schedule an appointment online today or call (602) 328-5066 in the Phoenix area or (520) 618-1884 in Tucson.

As the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day approaches on April 22, many Arizona homeowners are looking at ways to be more energy efficient. According to The Learning Channel’s (TLC) Green Living webpage, home cooling and heating comprise 40% of the average citizen’s energy consumption.

Here are some tips to help you reduce your Phoenix heating and air conditioning energy consumption this summer.

Regular Air Conditioning Maintenance – Regular tune-ups for your car can improve your gas mileage. The same can be said for your air conditioning system. Regular maintenance of your system can improve efficiency and comfort, according to the EPA.

Install a Programmable Thermostat – A programmable thermostat automatically reduces heating and cooling in your home when you don’t need as much, thereby saving energy and money. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website, homeowners can save about $180 a year in energy costs by installing a programmable thermostat and properly setting and maintaining the settings. Southwest Gas customers may be eligible to receive a rebate of $20 for installing a qualifying programmable thermostat.

Pay Attention to Ducts – Ducts that move air to-and-from a central air conditioner are often big energy wasters, according to the EPA’s website. Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your Phoenix heating and air conditioning system by as much as 20 percent – or more. TLC’s Green Living page estimates that a majority of homes lose about 20% of their cooling energy through leaky ducts. You should never block vents or ducts inside the house. Maintaining clear air paths allows your cooling system to work more efficiently.

Replace Your Old Air Conditioner – Local power companies are offering rebates to homeowners who install a more energy-efficient system. APS customers replacing their existing Phoenix heating and air conditioning system could be eligible for rebates from $175 to $525, depending on the SEER level. SRP customers can receive rebates up to $400 on qualifying systems. Top manufacturers Carrier and Trane are also offering incentives. You can get up to $1250 in a Trane instant rebate on qualifying systems purchased by June 14, 2012. As part of their “Cool Cash” program, Carrier is offering up to a $1250 instant rebate on qualifying systems purchased by June 30, 2012.

Consider doing your party for the environment by lowering your energy consumption. Chas Roberts is celebrating 70 years of serving Arizona homeowners and they can help you be energy efficient while staying cool. Schedule an appointment online or call (602) 328-5066 in the Phoenix area or (520) 618-1884 in Tucson to learn more about why you should choose Chas.

With summer right around the corner, home owners are preparing for the high temperatures of the desert heat. Home owners should test their Arizona air conditioning units to ensure they are working properly and ready to provide a safe haven for families. After months of nonuse several things may have happened to make your AC unit ineffective for the summertime, causing you to call for an Arizona air conditioning repair person. Some of the most common reasons for repair are included below.

Wiring Issues

Wiring issues are one of the most common reasons for an AC unit to need repairs. This is especially dangerous in the Arizona heat and could be a fire hazard for homes. Improperly installed wiring may prevent the unit from receiving power and cooling your home or in some cases, it can trip the circuit breaker, according to the Home Improvement blog on SuperPages.com.

Refrigerant

Since the 1980’s, the refrigerant used in residential and light commercial air conditioning units was R-22 (commonly known as Freon) until the federal government banned its use due to concerns about depletion of the ozone layer. This ban prohibited the manufacturing of air conditioning units that used R-22 refrigerant effective January 2010. Since January 2010, the refrigerant used is R-410A.

Refrigerant is an odorless, colorless chemical that can leak and may be difficult to detect without proper training. Although the chemical is nonflammable, leaks can still be dangerous. The most obvious issue is that a lack of refrigerant will cause your unit to work harder to produce cold air and raise your energy bill.

Fan

Another common occurrence that will need repair is when the outside fan is not working properly. The fan works to remove hot air from the home and the unit. In the heat of summer an Arizona air conditioning unit without a properly working fan can overheat in a short amount of time. This can turn on the safety overload or potentially cause internal damage to the unit’s compressor.

Inside Coil

Finally, inside each AC unit is a coil. The coil contains the Freon which cools the air that is pumped throughout your home. Units in need of repair may develop a frozen coil. This can be caused by a number of things from an improper amount of Freon, to a blocked air duct. Traditionally AC repair professionals view a frozen coil as an indication of another problem.

It is hard to imagine life in the Arizona heat without the comfort of efficiently and effectively working air conditioning units. It’s time to consult a trustworthy AC contractor like Chas Roberts. Chas Roberts is celebrating 70 years of service to Arizonans, and is available to help you with your Arizona air conditioning today! Schedule an appointment online or call (602) 328-5066 in the Phoenix area or (520) 618-1884 in Tucson to learn more about why you should choose Chas.
